Parliament House Poster Competition & Open Day
Primary schools across Australia are invited to design a poster for Parliament House as part of its 20th Anniversary celebrations.
Schools can register for the competition by filling out an entry form by Friday 28 March 2008. All poster entries must be received by 5pm Wednesday 30 April 2008.
The poster should contain the slogan “It's Our House” with the rest of the design left entirely up to the imagination. Entries are judged on originality, creativity and entertainment value and the winning school shares in prize money, with their poster prominently displayed in Canberra at Parliament House's 20th Anniversary Open Day in May.
The 20th Anniversary Open Day will be held on 10 May 2008 from 9am to 5pm. Exhibitions, tours and entertainment are available throughout the day.

PEO joins Primary and Secondary Principals in Leadership Conference
The PEO is proud to sponsor this year's APPA/ASPA* conference in Hobart from 28 September to 3 October.
Called the 'Winds of Change', Australian and international primary and secondary principals will gather to ponder themes of leadership, learning and performance. As in previous years the PEO will be involved in a number of ways:
- The conference will be addressed by Mr David Hawker MP, Speaker of the House of Representatives.
- The PEO will present a workshop titled ‘Knowledge is Power–Know your Parliament!’
- The PEO booth will demonstrate how our website can assist teachers in the classroom.

SA Fellows on ‘Getting on top of the Parliament’
In February 2007, the Parliamentary Education Office (PEO) welcomed six fellows from South Australia (SA) and helped them discover the House on the hill.
a quieter moment in the House of Representatives … a contrast to the energy and disquiet of afternoons spent keeping up with Question Time—then keeping pace with the development of issues reported in the evening news.
photo opportunities at an unexpected time … while we enjoyed a coffee at Aussies—an opportunity too good to miss for one South Australian fellow, pictured here with the Prime Minister.
the much appreciated hospitality of the President of the Senate … who shared afternoon tea and chatted a while in the relaxed and gracious surrounds of the President’s suite.
enjoying the view from the hill … on a clear, sunny Canberra afternoon—it is day five and we are ‘on top of’ the Parliament and wiser for the privilege of having observed our democratic processes at work in the home of Australian governance.
This story was contributed by Jill Mcdonald, on behalf of the SA fellows.
The PEO actively encourages the participation of friends and colleagues in the development of this section of our website. If you have a story, photograph, piece of news or a bright idea to share, we want to hear from you!
