This diagram illustrates the judicial hierarchy in the form of a pyramid.

The federal hierarchy is at the top and is made up of the following (in descending order):

  • High Court
  • Federal Court
  • Federal Magistrates Court
  • Family Court

The state hierarchy is below the federal hierarchy and is made up of the following (in descending order):

  • Supreme courts
  • county courts and district courts
  • Local courts, magistrates courts, courts of petty sessions
