Speaker Script
| Instructions | Script |

| When the Serjeant-at-Arms has introduced you and placed the Mace on the table, say: | Members, please sit down. |
After the Clerk has read out the rules, say: |
Clerk, read the title of the Bill. |
| Then say: | I call the Minister for _____________________to introduce the Bill. |
Call on members to deliver their speeches in turn.
When the time for debating is over, adjourn the chamber. |
I call the Shadow Minister for _______________________. I call the Member for _____________________ (use first or second name).
Order! The House is now adjourned. |
| When the debate begins again, choose members to speak in turn. | Stand if you wish to speak. I call the Member for _____________________ (use first or second name). |
When the time for debating is over say: |
Order! A vote on the Bill will now be taken. The question is that the Bill be read a second time. Those who agree say ‘Aye’ Those who disagree say ‘No’.
I think the ‘Ayes’ have it. |
Then say:
Wait for the whip to reply. If a division is required say: |
Order! Opposition Whip, is a division required?
Division is required. Clerk ring the bells. |
| When the bells stop ringing say: | Order! Those who support the Bill move to the right of the Speakers chair and those who oppose the Bill move to the left of the Speakers chair. Whips count the vote. |
| When the whips have counted the votes and told you the result, stand up and say: | Order! Result of the division. The number of votes for the Bill is … The number of votes against the Bill is … The Bill is agreed to. |
| Then say: | Clerk, read the title of the Bill a second time. |
End the session by saying: Follow the Serjeant-at-Arms out of the chamber. |
Order! The House is now adjourned. |

When the Speaker asks you to read out the rules, stand and say:
Then sit down. |
Always stand up to speak. Always address your remarks through the Speaker. Begin with the words ‘Madam Speaker’ or ‘ Mr Speaker ’. Members should not interrupt each other. The Speaker keeps order. |
When the Speaker asks you to read the title of the Bill stand and say: Then sit down. |
First reading: The __________________ Bill . A Bill for an Act to________________________________. |
After the division the Speaker will ask you to read the title of the Bill a second time. Stand up and say: Then sit down. |
Second reading: The _________________ Bill . A Bill for an Act to____________________________________. |
