Role-play toolkit: seating Plans

Where you sit in the Parliament—be it a chamber, meeting room or office—tells a lot about who you are and what you do. For this reason a seating plan is important to the conduct of a Parliamentary Education Office (PEO) role-play and to students’ understanding of their role and behaviour.

The following [simplified] seating plans are for use with three suggested DIY Role-play in the Classrooms: Law-making, Question Time, and Committee.

Diagrams are provided in two versions—JPG and PDF for viewing on the website and for easy printing.

Law-making and Question Time Role-play Seating Plans

Consideration of proposed legislation (bills) and scrutiny of government action during Question Time occurs in both the House and Senate chambers. You can reproduce these chambers using nothing more than the space, tables and chairs available to you in your classroom.

To view an authentic chamber seating plan, go to Law-making Diagrams. A range of other diagrams that help to explain the role and operations of the Parliament are also available.

Committee Seating Plan (House or Senate)

Committees are not conducted in the chamber, but in committee rooms throughout Parliament House and in venues across Australia. The seating plan for a House of Representatives committee or a Senate committee is the same and can be modelled using the furniture you already have in your classroom!

To view an authentic committee seating plan, go to Committee Diagrams. A range of other diagrams that help to explain the role and operations of the Parliament are also available.
