The opening of the 46th Parliament

The 46th Parliament opened on 2 July with 45 newly-elected members, including 27 in the House of Representatives and 18 new senators.

The day started with a Welcome to Country in the Great Hall and a smoking ceremony on the Forecourt. The Chief Justice of the High Court, the Honourable Justice Susan Kiefel AC, acting as the Governor-General’s Deputy, then officially opened the Parliament in the Senate and presided over the swearing-in of new senators. High Court Justice the Honourable Stephen Gageler AC presided over the swearing-in of members of the House of Representatives. This was followed by the election of the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
